SUMMARY:Experience the Magic of Brookgreen Gardens with CEO Page Kiniry
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the release of Brookgreen Gardens: Ever Changing. Simply Amazing with the Charleston Library Society and Brookgreen Gardens President and CEO\, Page Kiniry. The botanical garden in Georgetown\, South Carolina is a 9\,127-acre National Historic Landmark and America’s first public sculpture garden. \nTo RSVP to this free event\, call 843-723-9912 or fill out the form below. \nAbout the Book:\nAn oasis of art and nature\, Brookgreen Gardens is America’s first public sculpture garden and largest collection of American figurative sculpture. Founded in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and Anna Hyatt Huntington\, its lush South Carolina coastal location\, between Myrtle Beach to the north and Charleston to the south\, is an exquisite setting for the more than two thousand works by four hundred twenty-five artists―including more than one hundred sculptures and other works by Anna Huntington\, many placed in the gardens she designed. In 1984\, Brookgreen was designated as a National Historic Landmark\, highlighting the number of women sculptors whose work is presented in the collection\, as well as the significance of the work of Anna Huntington. Today\, Brookgreen has become a cultural institution unlike any other\, blending sculpture\, historic sites\, botanical gardens\, and the Lowcountry Zoo. \nAbout Page:\nSince January 2017\, Page Kiniry has directed operations of Brookgreen Gardens. Under her leadership\, Brookgreen has completed new Strategic and Master Plans\, expanded evening events including Nights of a Thousand Candles and Summer Light: Art by Night and developed new programming in all areas of the mission.  Kiniry is leading the institution’s first Capital Campaign in thirty years\, which was publicly announced in April 2022. Campaign projects underway or completed include the Leonard Pavilion for public events and programs\, Bethea’s Heritage Farm Garden\, a new Spanish Goat exhibit and barn\, an endangered Red Wolf exhibit and breeding facility\, and the Rosen Galleries\, Brookgreen’s new changing exhibits galleries. \nPrior to joining Brookgreen\, Kiniry was Executive Director of the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News\, Virginia\, where she spent eleven years enhancing the Museum’s educational mission with new exhibits and programs\, eliminating its $9 million debt\, and adding new amenities including a café and amphitheater. A graduate of the College of William and Mary with a master’s degree from the University of Richmond\, Kiniry is a 2018 graduate of Leadership South Carolina\, a peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums\, a member of the National Garden Advisory Group and a member of the Board of Visitors of Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University.  She and her husband Bill live in Pawleys Island with Angus\, Brookgreen Garden’s Scottish Deerhound mascot.

SUMMARY:Andrew Caldwell Shares His Newest Release\, "The Presidents School: A New Way Forward"
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming well-seasoned traveler and wildly talented author\, Andrew Caldwell\, as he shares his newest book\, The Presidents School: A New Way Forward. This event is free and open to the public\, but an RSVP is required. \nTo RSVP\, click fill out the form below or call 843-723-9912. \nAbout the Book:\nAmerica’s first Jewish President Byron Weiss stuns the nation when he declines to run for a second term and instead promotes a new cadre of men and women to replace the old guard in Congress. The first candidates of the newly established ‘Presidents’ School’ start churning out creative ideas for geopolitics and diplomacy\, like offering the nation of Israel the chance to become the 51st state by relocating to southern New\nMexico. As the West embraces the changes\, longing for the possibility of an end to conflict in the Middle East\, Iran\, China and Russia plot to destroy any hope of peace and stability. When a U-boat marked with a swastika symbol is spotted followed by displays of aggression\, the members of the Presidents’ School are called to action before a dreadful time in history repeats itself. \nAbout the Author:\nEducated in an English monastic school\, Andrew Caldwell elected to find a career that allowed him to travel the globe. He initially trained to be a chef from the early age of 13 in the Caribbean working his way up to Head Chef positions in Bermuda\, Mexico and Hawaii before transitioning into resort management in America\, the Caribbean\, Europe and Africa. From King’s Tut’s tomb\, Machu Picchu\, Hadrian’s Wall to the pirate haunts of the Caribbean\, his passion for learning history combined with cooking has taken him to over sixty countries. He is the author of a trilogy of historical cookery books called Their Last Suppers\, Legends of History and Their Final Meals which tells the stories of legendary personalities of time\, their lives\, and culminates with the recipe for their last meals. The Presidents’ School is his first published novel. Andrew is popular for his book signings and speaking engagements\, weaving in his experiences and life stories to how his books came to life. Andrew promotes his books globally and presently lives in Charleston\, South Carolina\, USA.

SUMMARY:Politics\, History\, and the Role of the American South with Frye Gaillard
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to partner with Buxton Books to host an evening of history and politics with Frye Gaillard\, who will be discussing his collaboration with Cynthia Tucker\, The Southernization of America: a Story of Democracy in the Balance. Gaillard will explore the role of the South and how it’s woven into the fabric of American politics and culture. \nTo RSVP to this free event\, call 843-723-9912 or fill out the form below. \nAbout the Book:\nIn 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work\, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton’s thesis forward in The Southernization of America\, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America’s current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper\, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today\, the racial backlash against President Obama\, family separation on our southern border\, the rise of the Christian right\, the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville\, the death of George Floyd\, and the attack on our nation’s capitol. They find hope in the South too\, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history\, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege. \nAbout Frye:\nFrye Gaillard is a writer in residence at the University of South Alabama and award-winning author of more than 20 books\, including Watermelon Wine: The Spirit of Country Music\, The Quilt: And the Poetry of Alabama Music\, Journey to the Wilderness: War\, Memory\, and a Southern Family’s Civil War Letters\, The Books That Mattered: A Reader’s Memoir\, and Go South to Freedom\, all published by NewSouth Books. His book A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s\, Our Decade of Hope\, Possibility\, and Innocence Lost is forthcoming from NewSouth. He is the winner of the Lillian Smith Award\, the Clarence Cason Award for Non-Fiction\, the Alabama Library Association Book of the Year Award\, and the 2016 Eugene Current-Garcia Award For Distinction in Literary Scholarship. \nAbout Cynthia:\nCynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist who has spent most of her career in journalism\, having previously worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a Washington-based political correspondent. Her work as a journalist has been celebrated by the National Association of Black Journalists\, who inducted her into its hall of fame\, Harvard University\, and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. Tucker spent three years as a visiting professor at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and is currently the journalist-in-residence at the University of South Alabama. Her weekly column focuses on political and cultural issues\, including income inequality\, social justice\, and public education reform.

SUMMARY:Coffee with an Author - Lindy Carter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opportunity to sip coffee with Lindy Carter\, learn about her newest book\, The Rice Birds\, and hear a short reading. Lindy will share her inspiration for the book\, events she adapted\, and interesting historical facts she uncovered during her research. \nWe are reigniting this series from when it initially started in 2019\, and look forward to getting back to these intimate conversations that will be held in our beloved\, booklined Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Lounge.\n \nTo RSVP to this free event\, call 843-723-9912 or fill out the form below. \nAbout the Book:\nIn 1849\, twin sisters fleeing Ireland’s famine arrive at New York’s seaport. Only Nora is allowed to get on the boat to South Carolina to fulfill her four-year indenture. On her employer’s vast rice plantation\, an enslaved worker—Pearl—befriends her. After one of them commits a crime\, the girls flee to Charleston\, where Nora frantically seeks to get back to her sister and Pearl tries to find her mother\, sold away long ago. Meanwhile\, an old enemy’s illegal transatlantic scheme is about to derail the girls’ plans. Historically accurate\, the book draws upon interviews with academics\, historians\, and educators\, as well as dissertations\, histories\, Gullah stories\, cookbooks\, and the diaries of Lowcountry rice planters. The Rice Birds takes the reader beyond the well-known narratives about Charleston’s history to build upon real events and lives that have seen little light in contemporary books. Some facts were so compelling\, they needed little embellishment before being woven into this tale. \nAbout Lindy:\nLindy Keane Carter is a graduate of the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism andMass Communications. After writing non-fiction for 30 years\, she began writing fiction in 2000. Her short stories won awards in 2003 and 2009 in the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Fiction Project contest. The Rice Birds is her third published novel. She lives in Mt. Pleasant\, SC.

SUMMARY:Drayton Hall Stories: A Place and Its People with George W. McDaniel
DESCRIPTION:A new portrayal of this 18th-century icon among America’s historic sites\, Drayton Hall Stories: A Place and Its People is the first book in the nation to focus on a site’s recent history using interviews with descendants (both White and Black)\, board members\, staff\, donors\, architects\, historians\, preservationists\, tourism leaders\, and more. Like different pieces of a mosaic\, each interview combines with others to create an engaging picture of this one place\, revealing never-before-shared family moments\, major decisions in preservation and site stewardship\, and pioneering efforts to transform a Southern plantation into a site for racial conciliation. Readers will come to see Drayton Hall’s people not as stereotypes\, but as the real people they were — and are. Maps\, photographs\, lines of descent\, interview questions\, a how-to guide\, and related website\, all provide blueprints for readers who wish to undertake similar endeavors to build community in today’s world. This event is free and open to the public\, but an RSVP is required. \nTo RSVP\, fill out the form below or call 843-723-9912. \nTo purchase your copy of “Drayton Hall Stories” from Buxton Books\, please click here. \nAbout the Author:\nGeorge W. McDaniel\, PhD\, is the President of McDaniel Consulting\, LLC\, a strategy firm that helps organizations and museums build bridges within itself and to its broader constituents. For more than 25 years\, he served as the Executive Director of Drayton Hall\, a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Charleston\, South Carolina. A native of Atlanta\, he earned a BA from Sewanee\, a MAT (history) from Brown University\, and PhD (history) from Duke. Interspersed through those years were travels to many places — Europe\, Africa\, Vietnam — where he saw peace and war and learned by experience about cultural differences and commonalities. Beginning with the Smithsonian Institution\, he has built a career in education and history museums\, earning awards at local\, state\, and national levels. A nationally respected museum professional and author\, he helps organizations to use history\, place\, and culture to enhance community

SUMMARY:CLS Book Club - "The Book Woman's Daughter"
DESCRIPTION:Join the CLS Book Club for a discussion of Kim Michele Richardson’s The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek highly anticipated sequel\, The Book Woman’s Daughter. Although we will be looking at a sequel\, you don’t have to read the first book to follow the story. Come ready to discuss and explore the themes of female independence\, sisterhood\, and justice in a morning jam-packed with a love for literature. All are welcome to participate in CLS Book Clubs\, no matter your reading progress! We encourage all to attend\, whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the half-way point.  \nCLS Book Club is free\, in-person\, and open to the public. All that is required is an RSVP. \nTo RSVP\, fill out the form at the bottom of the page. \n\nAbout the Book:\nIn the ruggedness of the beautiful Kentucky mountains\, Honey Lovett has always known that the old ways can make a hard life harder. As the daughter of the famed\, blue-skinned Troublesome Creek packhorse librarian\, Honey\, along with her family\, has been hiding from the law all her life. But when her mother and father are imprisoned\, Honey realizes she must fight to stay free\, or risk being sent away for good. \nPicking up her mother’s old packhorse library route\, Honey begins to deliver books to the remote hollers of Appalachia. Honey is looking to prove that she doesn’t need anyone telling her how to survive. But the route can be treacherous\, and some folks aren’t keen to let a woman pave her own way. \nIf Honey wants to bring the freedom books provide to the families who need it most\, she’s going to have to fight for her place\, and along the way\, learn that the extraordinary women who run the hills and hollers can make all the difference in the world.
