SUMMARY:Music Series // Brazilian Bossa at the Library with Porto Seguro
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society to welcome back Porto Seguro\, a six-person band playing Brazilian samba\, bossa nova\, and choro genres: mellow music with a soulful vibe\, like a great cup of coffee – and the band’s blend is Brazilian with upbeat American energy. \nJazz vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, has been Port Seguro’s headlining performer since 2020. Her soulful interpretations and captivating interpretations bring even more energy to the show than when the band last appeared at the Library Society in 2019. Other members include: Susan Conant on flutes\, John Holenko on mandolin\, Tom Noren on guitar\, John Kennedy on bass\, and Josh Hoover on drums. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$25 – Members or $35 – General Admission \nAbout the Band: \nPorto Seguro and vocalist\, Alva Anderson\, love sharing their enthusiasm for Brazilian music with audiences. The core members (Susan Conant\, flutes; John Holenko\, mandolins; Tom Noren\, guitar; and John Kennedy\, bass) started jamming together in 2014 on choro\, a lighthearted mix of Afro and European influences from early 20th century Brazil. In 2019 they were thrilled to have Alva Anderson sit in on a few sets. She immediately became the band’s headliner adding her expert jazz vocals and soulful spirit to the group. Along with Alva\, the group added drums bringing together a sound that leans heavily into Brazilian samba and bossa classics. The result was magic! Their lively shows now include well-known favorites (think Tom Jobim\, One Note Samba\, Girl from Ipanema) combined with lesser-known but equally wonderful gems of bossa nova (Brazil’s distinctive contribution to jazz) and samba (the raucous music of Carnival). The group has appeared for two full seasons at Charleston’s Forte Jazz Lounge\, and numerous local festivals and concert series including Concerts at the Library (Charleston Library Society)\, Piccolo Spoleto\, North Charleston Arts Festival\, Music on Sunday (Greenville\, SC)\, Music on Malphrus (Bluffton\, SC) and the Gage Hall Coffeehouse.

SUMMARY:~ In Conversation with Dr. Fields-Black on "COMBEE" and Harriet Tubman's Daring Raid
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books\, along with community partners Lowcountry Land Trust and the SC Historical Society\, are honored to host renowned author and historian Dr. Edda Fields-Black in conversation to discuss her most recent publication\, COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. In her book\, Dr. Fields-Black dives into the story of the Combahee River Raid\, one of Harriet Tubman’s most extraordinary accomplishments\, based on original documents written by a descendant of one of the participants. Helping to shape the conversation will be Chief Conservation Officer of the Lowcountry Land Trust\, David Ray. \nSee below for Event Partners.  \nTickets*: Purchase HERE \n$10 – Members \n$15 – General Admission \n$50 – Members (Ticket includes 1 signed copy of COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War) \n$55 – General Admission (Ticket includes 1 signed copy of COMBEE) \n$60 – Limited Option (Includes 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of COMBEE) \nAbout the Book: \nMany biographies\, children’s books\, and films about Harriet Tubman omit a crucial chapter: during the Civil War\, hired by the Union Army\, she ventured into the heart of slave territory–Beaufort\, South Carolina–to live\, work\, and gather intelligence for a daring raid up the Combahee River to attack the major plantations of Rice Country\, the breadbasket of the Confederacy. \nIn COMBEE\, Edda L. Fields-Black–herself a descendant of one of the participants in the raid–shows how Tubman commanded a ring of spies\, scouts\, and pilots and participated in military expeditions behind Confederate lines. On June 2\, 1863\, Tubman and her crew led two regiments of Black US Army soldiers – the Second South Carolina Volunteers – alone with their white commanders up coastal South Carolina’s Combahee River in three gunboats. In a matter of hours\, they torched eight rice plantations and liberated 730 people\, people whose Lowcountry Creole language and culture Tubman could barely understand. The Second South Carolina Volunteers included a core group of black men who had liberated themselves from bondage on South Carolina’s Sea Island cotton plantations after the Battle of Port Royal in November 1861. In recounting this history\, Fields-Black also brings to life intergenerational\, extended enslaved families\, neighbors\, praise-house members\, and sweethearts forced to work in South Carolina’s deadly tidal rice swamps\, sold\, and separated during the antebellum period. These formerly enslaved peoples of the Sea Island indigo and cotton plantations come together with the semi-urban port cities of Charleston\, Beaufort\, and Savannah\, and the rice plantations of the coastal plains\, creating the distinctly American Gullah Geechee dialect\, culture\, and identity–perhaps the most significant legacy of Harriet Tubman’s Combahee River Raid. \nAbout Dr. Edda Fields-Black: \nEdda Fields-Black teaches history at Carnegie Mellon University and has written extensively about the history of West African rice farmers\, including in such works as Deep Roots: Rice Farmers in West Africa and the African Diaspora. She was a co-editor of Rice: Global Networks and New Histories\, which was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. Fields-Black has served as a consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture’s permanent exhibit\, “Rice Fields of the Lowcountry.” She is the executive producer and librettist of “Unburied\, Unmourned\, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice\,” a widely performed original contemporary classical work by celebrated composer John Wineglass. \nFields-Black is a descendant of Africans enslaved on rice plantations in Colleton County\, South Carolina; her great-great-great grandfather fought in the Combahee River Raid in June 1863. Her determination to illuminate the riches of the Gullah dialect\, and to reclaim Gullah Geechee history and culture\, has taken her to the rice fields of South Carolina and Georgia to those of Sierra Leone and Republic of Guinea in West Africa. \nAbout David Ray: \nDavid Ray is Lowcountry Land Trust’s Chief Conservation Officer. His team protects land and water in South Carolina’s coastal plain using traditional and innovative tools and funding. They steward a wide variety of conservation interests and works with communities to preserve places of natural resource\, recreational\, and cultural significance. Previously an attorney in government\, large firms\, and academic settings. He became Lands Program Director for the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy in 2002. Subsequently\, he managed conservation planning and grant-making programs at the Open Space Institute and has led conservation programs for The Nature Conservancy in the Southern Blue Ridge and Colorado. David holds degrees from Davidson College and the University of Georgia School of Law. During his career\, he has played a significant role in over sixty conservation projects on more than 48\,500 acres. \n  \nEvent Partners \nLowcountry Land Trust: \nFounded in 1986\, Lowcountry Land Trust has worked for 37 years protecting land that makes coastal South Carolina extraordinary and sustains the culture that thrives within it. Operating in seventeen coastal counties\, Lowcountry Land Trust has grown from a small community effort that rallied to protect an island on the Stono River to an institution that protects more than 150\,000 acres. Protecting and maintaining our natural resources by avoiding overdevelopment is crucial to the continued enjoyment of the Lowcountry for generations to come. In addition to Lowcountry Land Trust’s conservation easements held and privately owned lands\, LLT owns and protects publicly-accessible properties that are in direct harmony with the culture and values of the Lowcountry. These ambassador sites emphasize the importance of regional lands and showcase examples of conservation to the community. \nSouth Carolina Historical Society: \nWith 350 years of state history comprised of rare books\, manuscripts\, and visual materials\, the South Carolina Historical Society is the state’s largest and oldest private archive as well as a modern historical museum. Founded in 1855\, the organization’s preservation\, exploration\, and interpretation of the state’s historical legacy continues to benefit generations of learners. Its mission is “to expand\, preserve and make accessible our collection; to improve knowledge of and encourage focus\, interest and pride in the history of our state.” \nCoastal Community Foundation of South Carolina: \nCoastal Community Foundation works to create communities rich in equity\, opportunity\, and well-being by uniting people and investing resources so that all community members have a pathway to achieve their goals. Through endowment funds established by individuals\, families\, businesses and organizations\, our combined resources allow us to not only address community needs today\, but help us chart a course for a brighter future in the nine counties we serve along South Carolina’s coast. With our donors\, we invest millions of dollars through grantmaking\, impact investing and scholarships each year. We are also known for understanding and acting upon the dynamic needs of the communities we serve\, with recent examples including our disaster response efforts during and after major storms such as Hurricane Florence\, and the creation of the Lowcountry Unity Fund in the wake of the Mother Emanuel AME Church massacre to support causes addressing systemic racism.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Hampton Sides ~ "The Wide Wide Sea"

Jeannette during the Gilded Age. \nAt once a ferociously-paced story of adventure on the high seas and a searching examination of the complexities and consequences of the Age of Exploration\, The Wide Wide Sea is a major work from one of the finest narrative nonfiction writers.  To help shape the conversation\, Sides will be joined in conversation by fellow acclaimed historical narrative author\, James Scott. \nOn The Wide Wide Sea: \n“This exquisitely crafted and novelistic portrait of the mercurial captain enthralls.”\n— Publishers Weekly\, (starred) \n“Beautifully written and impeccably researched\, The Wide Wide Sea will delight readers new to the topic as well as those versed in earlier looks at James Cook and his milieu.”\n— Booklist \nJoin the Library Society as we welcome Sides during his East Coast tour and dive deeper into his tale of the most thrilling time of human exploration. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through the following link: The Wide Wide Sea or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670. \nAbout The Book:  \nFrom New York Times bestselling author Hampton Sides\, an epic account of the most momentous voyage of the Age of Exploration\, which culminated in Captain James Cook’s death in Hawaii\, and left a complex and controversial legacy still debated to this day. On July 12th\, 1776\, Captain James Cook\, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history\, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later\, on a beach on the island of Hawaii\, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook\, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures\, come to that fatal moment?\n\nHampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration in the 1700s. Cook was renowned for his peerless seamanship\, his humane leadership\, and his dedication to science\, and was also deeply interested in the native people he encountered. He treated his crew well and endeavored to learn about the societies he encountered with curiosity and without judgment. Yet something was different on this last voyage. Cook became mercurial\, ordering violent retaliation on native peoples\, resorting to the lash to enforce discipline\, and leading his two vessels into danger time and again. This may have had something to do with his secret orders\, which were to chart and claim lands before Britain’s imperial rivals could\, and to discover the fabled Northwest Passage. The tensions between Cook’s overt and covert missions came to a head on the shores of Hawaii. His first landing there was harmonious\, but when Cook returned after mapping the coast of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska\, his exploitative treatment of the Hawaiians led to the fatal encounter. \nAbout Hampton Sides: \nHampton Sides is best known for his gripping non-fiction adventure stories set in war or depicting epic expeditions of exploration. His most recent work\, The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition\, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook\, will be published in April 2024 from Doubleday. Hampton has been a contributor to Outside\, National Geographic\, Smithsonian\, The New Yorker\, The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, and many other newspapers and magazines. His journalistic work\, collected in numerous published anthologies\, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing. A native of Memphis and a Yale graduate\, Hampton is a board member of the Society of American Historians and the Author’s Guild\, and he was a recent Miller Distinguished Scholar at the Santa Fe Institute. He has been a resident fellow at Yaddo\, the MacDowell Colony\, the Aspen Institute\, the Ucross Foundation\, and Stanford University. He has an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Colorado College. Hampton lives in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nAbout James Scott \nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Amazon\, Kirkus\, and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. His other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Scott lives with his wife and two children in Mt. Pleasant\, SC.

SUMMARY:Lite Lunch // Dana Mattioli ~ The Everything War
DESCRIPTION:From veteran Amazon reporter for The Wall Street Journal\, The Everything War is the first untold\, devastating exposé of Amazon’s endless strategic greed\, from destroying Main Street to remaking corporate power\, in pursuit of total domination\, by any means necessary. Dana Mattioli has been a reporter for The Wall Street Journal since 2006\, has written investigative pieces and front-page stories about Amazon since 2019\, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Journalism for her work on Amazon. Join the Library Society and Buxton Books to welcome Dana in discussion with Rob Copeland\, a finance reporter for the New York Times and the author of the New York Times bestseller “The Fund: Ray Dalio\, Bridgewater Associates and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend”\, diving into the definitive\, inside story of how Amazon grew into one of the most powerful and feared companies in the world. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$25 – Members or $35 – General Admission \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through the following link: The Everything War or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670 \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nAbout the Book: \nIn 2017\, Lina Khan published a paper that accused Amazon of being a monopoly\, having grown so large\, and embedded in so many industries\, it was akin to a modern-day Standard Oil. Unlike Rockefeller’s empire\, however\, Bezos’s company had grown voraciously without much scrutiny. In fact\, for over twenty years\, Amazon had emerged as a Wall Street darling and its “customer obsession” approach made it indelibly attractive to consumers across the globe. However\, the company was not benevolent; it operated in ways that ensured it stayed on top. Lina Khan’s paper would light a fire in Washington\, and in a matter of years\, she would become the head of the FTC. In 2023\, the FTC filed a monopoly lawsuit against Amazon in what may become one of the largest antitrust cases in the 21st century. \nWith unparalleled access\, and having interviewed hundreds of people – from Amazon executives to competitors to small businesses who rely on its marketplace to survive – Mattioli exposes how Amazon was driven by a competitive edge to dominate every industry it entered\, bulldozed all who stood in its way\, reshaped the retail landscape\, transformed how Wall Street evaluates companies\, and altered the very nature of the global economy. It has come to control most of online retail and uses its own sellers’ data to compete with them through Amazon’s own private label brands. Millions of companies and governmental agencies use AWS\, paying hefty fees for the service. And\, the company has purposefully avoided collecting taxes for years\, exploited partners\, and even copied competitors—leveraging its power to extract whatever it can\, at any cost. It has continued to gain market share in disparate areas\, from media to logistics and beyond. Most companies dominate one or two industries; Amazon now leads in several. And all of this was by design. \nAbout Dana Mattioli: \nDana’s Amazon coverage received the 2021 Gerald Loeb Award for Beat Reporting. SUMMARY:The Cold War: Modernist Architecture as Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Charleston Library Society in welcoming Author David B. Peterson\, Executive Director of the Onera Foundation\, a private foundation dedicated to supporting historic preservation in the United States. Peterson will discuss his new book US Embassies of the Cold War: the Architecture of Democracy\, Diplomacy and Defense. The lecture will dive into the details of how during the Cold War\, the US State Department used modern architecture as a powerful form of cultural diplomacy\, designing embassies to express the American ideals of a progressive\, democratic society. Peterson will expand on the little-known story of the US State Department’s bid to win international hearts and minds through the strategic use of modernist architecture and cultural diplomacy at the height of the international conflict between communism and democracy.  \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nAbout the Book: \nUS Embassies of the Cold War: the Architecture of Democracy\, Diplomacy and Defense is a large-format\, photo-driven book featuring the fourteen most significant midcentury modern American Embassies designed by leading architects\, including; Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius\, Marcel Breuer\, Eero Saarinen\, Edward Durell Stone. The Cold War embassies are being decommissioned and sold\, replaced by high-security compounds. The book is available at OneraFoundation.org. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Onera Foundation and its mission to inform and engage the public about historic preservation and significant architecture. \n“This book is an open-eyed investigation into the results of the unlikely meeting between progressive culture and public policy at a particular moment in time. With an extraordinary collection of photographs and graphics not seen elsewhere\, Peterson enables us to know that past\, reckon with what was once significant\, and learn about options that may exist today or tomorrow in a rapidly changing global landscape.” -Historian and author Jane Loeffler\, Ph.D  \nAbout David B. Peterson: \nDavid B. Peterson is the Executive Director of the Onera Foundation\, a private foundation dedicated to supporting historic preservation in the United States. SUMMARY:CLS Book Club // "North Woods" by Daniel Mason
DESCRIPTION:CLS Book Club is FREE\, in-person\, and open to the public—whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the halfway point. All that is required is an RSVP via the form below. \nPlease note the author will not be in attendance.  \nAbout the Program: \nOffered a few times a year\, the CLS Book Club seeks to explore a wide range of topics\, authors and diversity within its book selections. Under this objective\, the Book Club also offers space for conversation\, perspectives and discourse. \nThis meeting of the CLS Book Club will be presented by the ambitious duo\, Susan DiCamillo and Tina Wardrop. Julian Buxton (Author of Ghosts of Charleston) will weigh in on the paranormal aspects of the Book\, after which the floor will open to discussion. \nAbout the Book:\nWhen two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony\, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier\, destined for glory\, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine\, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets. A lovelorn painter\, a sinister con man\, a stalking panther\, a lusty beetle: As the inhabitants confront the wonder and mystery around them\, they begin to realize that the dark\, raucous\, beautiful past is very much alive. \nThis magisterial and highly inventive novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason brims with love and madness\, humor and hope. Following the cycles of history\, nature\, and even language\, North Woods shows the myriad\, magical ways in which we’re connected to our environment\, to history\, and to one another. It is not just an unforgettable novel about secrets and destinies\, but a way of looking at the world that asks the timeless question: How do we live on\, even after we’re gone? \nFor a copy of the book\, check out our catalog here\, or shop local at Buxton Books.

SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // The Santee Canal: SC's First Commercial Highway
DESCRIPTION:The Santee Canal: the first inland navigation route from the Upcountry of the South Carolina Piedmont to the port of Charleston and the Atlantic Ocean\, finished in the early 19th century. The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books are honored to host Dr. Richard Porcher\, one of three authors of The Santee Canal: South Carolina’s First Commercial Highway\, for a book tour exclusive presentation and discussion on his comprehensive story of SC’s historical accomplishment. Dr. Porcher\, a former Citadel professor and researcher of 33 years\, will be introduced by co-author and former Citadel colleague Elizabeth Connor\, M.Ed\, who in 2019 took a sabbatical to conduct background and field research for the publication with Dr. Porcher. Led by Dana Beach\, Founder & Director Emeritus-South Carolina Coastal Conservation League\, the discussion will dive into the research on the canal and divulge never-before-published historical plans\, maps\, and photographs from the book. \nTickets*: PURCHASE HERE \n$10 – Members or $15 – General Admission \nAbout the Book: \nA history of one of America’s earliest canals and its impact on the people of the South Carolina Lowcountry \nCompleted in 1800\, the Santee Canal connected the Cooper\, Santee\, Congaree\, and Wateree rivers: the engineered waterway transformed the lives of many in the state and affected economic development in the Southeast region of the newly formed United States. In The Santee Canal\, authors Elizabeth Connor\, Dr. Richard Dwight Porcher Jr.\, and William Robert Judd provide an authoritative and richly illustrated history of one of America’s first canals. \nThe Santee Canal connected distant settlements\, reversed the economic fortunes of planters who altered the relationships between enslaved and enslavers\, and represented an important engineering achievement of the early canal-building era in the United States. This remarkable economic\, social\, and political story is brought to life by the stories of the many individuals who had a hand in building the canal. From the landowners through whose property it cut\, to the enslaved laborers who carved its path\, to the enigmatic chief engineer Johann Christian Senf—the individual and local perspectives on this grand undertaking ground this history in the life and times of late 18th-century South Carolina. \nConnor\, Porcher\, and Judd tell a comprehensive story of the canal’s origins and history. Imagery from historical and personal archives\, field research\, and technical drawings enhance the text\, allowing readers to appreciate the development\, evolution\, and effect of the Santee Canal on the land and the people of South Carolina. \nAbout Dr. Richard Porcher: \nRichard Dwight Porcher Jr.\, a native of Pinopolis in Berkeley County\, South Carolina\, currently resides in Mt. Pleasant. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1957 and earned a BS in biology from the College of Charleston in 1962. Porcher received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1974\, where he studied field botany under the noted botanist Dr. Wade T. Batson. In 1970\, he began a thirty-three-year tenure as a biology professor at The Citadel. \nIn 1995\, he published Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry and Lower Pee Dee (USC Press). He is the senior author of Wildflowers of South Carolina\, published in October 2001 with Doug Rayner (USC Press). Porcher\, now Professor Emeritus at The Citadel since retiring in 2003\, previously served as Adjunct Full Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University. There\, he established the Wade T. Batson Endowment in Field Botany to support students studying the state’s flora and plant ecology. \nPorcher is currently photographing the wildflowers and plants of South Carolina\, with 1\,600 different species already documented. These photographs have been placed in the public domain. \nPorcher’s most recent publication is tonight’s subject matter\, The Santee Canal\, which he produced in collaboration with an assembled a team of historians and archaeologists. Porcher’s accolades include the 2006 Charleston Horticultural Society’s 1830 Award\, the 2008 South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award\, the 2015 Citadel School of Science and Mathematics Faculty Award\, The Order of the Palmetto in 2019\, and the Tom Dodd\, Jr. Award of Excellence by the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference in 2023. \nAbout Prof. Elizabeth Connor\, M.Ed.: \nElizabeth Connor\, MLS\, MEd is Professor Emerita of General Education at The Citadel\, the Military College of South Carolina. SUMMARY:Book Tour Exclusive // Paperback Pub Day Debut of "Lady Tan's Circle of Women"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the pub date of Lady Tan’s Circle of Women in paperback\, the latest historical novel from New York Times bestselling author Lisa See\, inspired by the true story of a woman physician from 15th-century China—perfect for fans of See’s classic Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and The Island of Sea Women. \n“See envelops her story in the accepted practices of the time: arranged marriages\, the buying and selling of concubines\, the pressure to provide male heirs\, and the crippling and sometimes deadly practice of female foot binding. Despite the inordinate limits placed on women\, See allows their strengths to dominate their stories\, even though not all women were graced with lives of fulfillment.”\n—The Washington Post \nThe Library Society and Buxton Books are honored to welcome Lisa See to dive into her newest historical novel. \nTickets*: Purchase HERE \n$30 – Members or $35 – General Admission // 1 Ticket and 1 signed copy of Lady Tan’s Circle of Women \n$40 – Limited Option  // 2 Tickets and 1 signed copy of Lady Tan’s Circle of Women* \n*There will be a limited number of first come two-for-one tickets available to CLS Members\, these tickets include two attendees and one signed copy of Lady Tan’s Circle of Women.  \nNOTE: If you are unable to attend the program\, and wish to secure a signed copy (or copies!)\, please pre-order through the following link: Lady Tan’s Circle of Women or call Buxton Books at (843) 723-1670 \nThis is a collaborative event with Buxton Books\, guest information such as email and name will be shared between both parties for promotional purposes only. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nAccording to Confucius\, “an educated woman is a worthless woman\,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family\, yet haunted by death\, separations\, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China\, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine\, the Four Examinations—looking\, listening\, touching\, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient. \nFrom a young age\, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses\, many of which relate to childbearing\, alongside a young midwife-in-training\, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends\, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud\, no lotus\, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom. \nBut when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage\, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers\, recite poetry\, give birth to sons\, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound\, the Garden of Fragrant Delights. \nHow might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? A captivating story of women helping each other\, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a triumphant reimagining of the life of one person who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today. \nABOUT LISA SEE \nLisa See is the New York Times bestselling author of The Island of Sea Women\, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane\, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan\, Peony in Love\, Shanghai Girls\, China Dolls\, and Dreams of Joy\, which debuted at #1. She is also the author of On Gold Mountain\, which tells the story of her Chinese American family’s settlement in Los Angeles. See was the recipient of the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the Historymaker’s Award from the Chinese American Museum. She was also named National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women.
