SUMMARY:CLS Book Club - "The Book Woman's Daughter"
DESCRIPTION:Join the CLS Book Club for a discussion of Kim Michele Richardson’s The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek highly anticipated sequel\, The Book Woman’s Daughter. Although we will be looking at a sequel\, you don’t have to read the first book to follow the story. Come ready to discuss and explore the themes of female independence\, sisterhood\, and justice in a morning jam-packed with a love for literature. All are welcome to participate in CLS Book Clubs\, no matter your reading progress! We encourage all to attend\, whether you’ve finished the book\, are thinking about starting it\, or couldn’t make it past the half-way point.  \nCLS Book Club is free\, in-person\, and open to the public. All that is required is an RSVP. \nTo RSVP\, fill out the form at the bottom of the page. \n\nAbout the Book:\nIn the ruggedness of the beautiful Kentucky mountains\, Honey Lovett has always known that the old ways can make a hard life harder. As the daughter of the famed\, blue-skinned Troublesome Creek packhorse librarian\, Honey\, along with her family\, has been hiding from the law all her life. But when her mother and father are imprisoned\, Honey realizes she must fight to stay free\, or risk being sent away for good. \nPicking up her mother’s old packhorse library route\, Honey begins to deliver books to the remote hollers of Appalachia. Honey is looking to prove that she doesn’t need anyone telling her how to survive. But the route can be treacherous\, and some folks aren’t keen to let a woman pave her own way. \nIf Honey wants to bring the freedom books provide to the families who need it most\, she’s going to have to fight for her place\, and along the way\, learn that the extraordinary women who run the hills and hollers can make all the difference in the world.

SUMMARY:A Curator + Artist Conversation with The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston for a special speaker series with Director & Chief Curator Katie McCampbell Hirsch in conversation with Multimedia Artist Kirsten Stolle. \nThe day before the Halsey Institute opens its Fall exhibition\, Only You Can Prevent A Forest: August 26 – December 10\, 2022\, Stolle and Hirsch will highlight what goes on behind the scenes during the sometimes years-long formation of a museum exhibition and the important partnership between artist and curator for any installation or permanent collection.  In addition\, they will share the artist’s story that inspires her work and that perspective for experiencing this new exhibit. \n\nTo RSVP to this free event\, fill out the form below. \n\nAbout Kirsten Stolle:\nKirsten Stolle is a visual artist working in collage\, drawing\, and installation. For her exhibition\, Only You Can Prevent A Forest\, Stolle will create photo-based collages\, visual poetry interventions\, text-based sound animation\, a neon wall piece\, and her first site-responsive sculptural installation. Building upon her decade-long research into companies like Bayer/Monsanto and Dow Chemical\, the work will forefront historical ties to chemical warfare and reveal persistent greenwashing. Stolle’s work interrogates the global influence of chemical companies on our food supply and their consistent efforts to downplay effects of their toxic products on our health and environment.\n \nOnly You Can Prevent A Forest is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission\, Charleston magazine\, and Mindelle Seltzer and Robert Lovinger. \nAbout the Halsey Institute:\nThe Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston provides a multidisciplinary laboratory for the production\, presentation\, interpretation\, and dissemination of ideas by innovative visual artists from around the world. SUMMARY:An understanding about "Curtis LeMay\, the Firebombing of Tokyo\, and the Road to the Atomic Bomb"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us\, in partnership with Buxton Books\, in welcoming our very own local 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist and author\, James Scott\, as he shares with us the first ever published in English Air Force archives and oral histories through the pages of Black Snow: Curtis LeMay\, the Firebombing of Tokyo\, and the Road to the Atomic Bomb. \nTickets are $10 for CLS members and $15 for guests. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in.\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nDrawing on first-person interviews with American pilots\, bombardiers and Japanese survivors\, after the most destructive air attack in history\, Scott delivers a harrowing and gripping account of the night when nearly 300 American B-29s thundered into the skies over Tokyo on March 9-10\, 1945. \nBlack Snow is the story of the devastating operation – in which killed more than 100\,000 men\, women\, and children – that was orchestrated by Major General Curtis LeMay\, who famously remarked: “If we lose the war\, we’ll be tried as war criminals.” James M. Scott reconstructs in granular detail that horrific night\, and describes the development of the B-29\, the capture of the Marianas for use as airfields\, and the change in strategy from high-altitude daylight “precision” bombing to low-altitude nighttime incendiary bombing. Most importantly\, the raid represented a significant moral shift for America\, marking the first time commanders deliberately targeted civilians which helped pave the way for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki five months later. \nAbout James M. Scott:\nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Amazon\, Kirkus\, and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. His other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Scott lives with his wife and two children in Mt. Pleasant\, SC. \nBuxton Book is offering $5 off Black Snow book sales at the event.

The First Romantics and the Invention of the Self\nFrom the best-selling author of The Invention of Nature comes an exhilarating story about a remarkable group of rebels who changed the way we think about ourselves and the world. Forget Paris… the real Revolution in the 1790s happened in Jena\, a quiet German university town where the unlikely revolutionaries were not soldiers or politicians but poets and playwrights (Goethe\, Schiller and Novalis)\, philosophers (Fichte\, Schelling and Hegel)\, literary critics (the contentious Schlegel brothers) and scientists (Alexander von Humboldt). And at their heart was the formidable and free-spirited Caroline Schlegel. \nIn Magnificent Rebels\, Andrea Wulf takes us on a vivid journey through their adventures and misadventures\, passionate love affairs and epic quarrels\, successes and heartbreak. We are still empowered by their daring leap into the self today. The French revolutionaries may have changed the political landscape\, but these young Romantics incited a revolution of the mind that shaped our modern world. \nAuthor Andrea Wulf:\nAndrea Wulf is the award-winning author of several books\, including Founding Gardeners\, Brother Gardeners\, and the bestselling The Invention of Nature which is published in 27 languages and won a Costa for Biography\, the Royal Society Award for Science and the LA Times Book Prize (and thirteen other international literary awards). Andrea has written for many newspapers including the Guardian\, New York Times\, Financial Times\, and The Atlantic. She is a member of PEN American Center and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She lives in London.

SUMMARY:A thrilling\, tragic and occasionally comic human story of the downfall of Bill Gross - the Bond King
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome the award-winning financial journalist Mary Childs as she paints a vivid picture of her book on Bill Gross – a once high powered Financier who\, through mismanagement and recklessness\, lost it all. Her in depth research of the finance world provides an accessible and illuminating description of the rise of the multitrillion-dollar bond market. Centering on a fascinating and entertaining character\, Bill Gross\, whose journey takes us right to the heart of the story of high finance over the last half century\, Childs will describe how it all began and unraveled for the man who is credited with turning a once sleepy and low-risk corner of finance (bonds) into an exciting casino. \nTickets are $25 for CLS members and $35 for guests. Free for students by calling the number listed below and showing a valid ID at check in (please note: boxed lunch not included with free admittance).\nTo purchase tickets\, click here or call 843-723-9912. \nAbout the Book:\nThe Bond King is the story of how whiz kid\, Bill Gross\, made American finance his casino. Over the course of decades\, Bill Gross turned the sleepy bond market into a destabilized game of high risk\, high reward; founded Pimco\, one of today’s most powerful\, secretive\, and cutthroat investment firms; helped to reshape our financial system in the aftermath of the Great Recession—to his own advantage; and gained legions of admirers\, and enemies\, along the way. Like every American antihero\, his ambition would also be his undoing. \nIt’s a vivid and authoritative portrait of one of the most influential figures in American finance\, Bill Gross. How he created the market for trading bonds\, how he dominated it\, and built an empire — to then be more or less ousted by his own firm. Few people and firms have had such an enormous impact shaping our world. It’s also a wild story of pettiness and drama between billionaires. \nAbout Mary Childs:\nMary Childs is the author of the bestselling book The Bond King: How One Man Made a Market\, Built an Empire\, and Lost It All and is a co-host at NPR’s Planet Money\, one of the world’s most popular podcasts. She’s been a reporter at Barron’s magazine\, the Financial Times\, and Bloomberg News. Before starting her career as a journalist\, she spent a year traveling the world painting portraits as a Watson Fellow. She graduated from Washington & Lee with an honors thesis on the use and significance of sting operations in media in the U.S. and India. She lives in Virginia with her family. \n\nReviews & Blurbs:\n“An instant classic of finance and a joy to read. Mary Childs has a gift for explaining the rise of the modern bond market\, one of the most important stories of finance\, and interlaces that story with the deeply reported\, thrilling\, tragic and occasionally comic human story of the downfall of Bill Gross. And it is all written with great style\, wit and insight. Anyone looking to understand the nuances of bonds or the difficulties of managing complicated people should read this book.” — Matt Levine\, ‘Money Stuff’ columnist\, Bloomberg Opinion \n\n“A most necessary book. Mary Childs is one of a handful of finance writers who understand how the industry has reshaped America and helped create the strange\, often failing society we inhabit. And one cannot understand modern finance without understanding the character of the mad bond king Bill Gross. Well-researched and written with verve\, this is nothing short of a page-turner.” — Gary Shteyngart\, author of Our Country Friends and Lake Success
