SUMMARY:2084 // Admiral Stavridis' Latest
DESCRIPTION:With a PhD in International Relations\, Admiral James Stavridis has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, yet NYT bestselling author is only one of his many titles. Retired 4-star officer of the US Navy\, Supreme Allied Commander\, Dean at Tufts University are a few others\, along with his current role as Partner and Vice Chairman with Carlyle Group. Following the success of 2034\, which he co-authored with Elliott Ackerman\, we could not be more honored to welcome Admiral Stavridis to Charleston to share its next iteration – 2084: A Novel of Future War. We look forward to seeing you for a special opportunity to share the room with this decorated Navy Veteran and prolific author. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912.\nAbout the Author \nAdmiral James Stavridis is Partner and Vice Chairman of Carlyle and Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Rockefeller Foundation\, following five years as the 12th Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. A retired 4-star officer in the U.S. Navy\, he led the NATO Alliance in global operations from 2009 to 2013 as Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan\, Libya\, the Balkans\, Syria\, counter piracy\, and cyber security. He also served as Commander of U.S. Southern Command\, with responsibility for all military operations in Latin America from 2006-2009. He earned more than 50 medals\, including 28 from foreign nations\, in his 37-year military career. Earlier in his military career\, he commanded the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet\, winning the Battenberg Cup\, as well as a squadron of destroyers and a carrier strike group – all in combat. In 2016\, he was vetted for Vice President by Hillary Clinton and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position in the Trump Administration. Admiral Stavridis earned a PhD in international relations and has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, including the recent novel 2034: A Novel of the Next World War\, which was a New York Times bestseller and To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and The Crucible of Decision. His most recent novel\, The Restless Wave: A Novel of the United States Navy\, was published in October 2024\, and The Admiral’s Bookshelf was published in March 2025. His 2012 TED talk on global security has close to one million views. Admiral Stavridis is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and Senior Military Analyst for CNN. \nAbout the Book \nA gripping drama and chilling prophecy about the possible path to war for a planet devastated by climate change. In their novel 2034\, decorated military officers and award-winning authors Elliot Ackerman and Admiral James Stavridis imagined a war between the US and China. In their follow-up novel\, 2054\, they envisioned a breakdown in American politics fueled by a radical advance in AI. Now they make their boldest\, most astonishing\, and arguably most necessary leap—imagining the consequences of a climate war. By the year 2084\, the world is divided into the equatorial countries that bear the brunt of the climate crisis—led by Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Indonesia—and wealthier countries like China and the US\, beset by their own problems after a series of civil wars. Tensions between the two sets of countries have reached a breaking point\, until finally the so-called Reparationist nations of the equator decide that only military force can bring them justice. A fascinating and disturbingly plausible extrapolation from current realities\, 2084\, like other classics of the genre such as Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future and Neal Stephenson’s Termination Shock\, deploys a global cast of characters\, all protecting their interests as the fate of human civilization hangs in the balance. Individuals often seem small in the face of the forces that drive global change\, but in the end\, human agency proves surprisingly decisive. Big doors can swing on small hinges. We have it within ourselves to write a different destiny\, if only we can imagine it.

DESCRIPTION:Look forward to the return of Pulitzer Prize finalist\, New York Times bestseller\, and Scholar in Residence at the Citadel\, James Scott\, for the pub-week launch of his new release\, Empire of Ashes\, joined on stage by Brian Jones\, Dean of the Citadel. As an acclaimed Pacific War Historian for a number of books\, including Black Snow\, Rampage\, and The War Below\, as well as Targeted: Beirut\, which he co-authored with Jack Carr\, his perspective on the harrowing story of America’s bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the struggle to end World War II is highly anticipated. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nOver three days in August 1945\, a nation once morally opposed to the bombing of civilians killed 120\,000 men\, women\, and children; doomed tens of thousands more to agonizing death in the weeks and months ahead; and annihilated two cities: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Empire of Ashes explores the final brutal months of the war in the Pacific\, featuring the voices of never-before-heard victims of the atomic bombs. Through interviews with survivors and accounts gleaned from Japanese sources\, New York Times best-selling author James M. Scott combines the attacks’ heart-wrenching details with their causes and consequences\, from debates within the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos\, Oakridge\, and Hanford to the fallout that would alter decades of life in Japan. From “an exceptional writer with a keen eye for dazzling detail and gripping\, suspenseful storytelling” (Henry Richard Maar III\, Journal of Military History)\, Empire of Ashes illuminates the moral dilemma at the center of America’s decision to inflict total war upon Japan with startling immediacy. \nAbout James M. Scott \nA Pulitzer Prize finalist and former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Target Tokyo\, Black Snow\, Rampage\, The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty. In addition\, Scott is a sought-after public speaker who leads battlefield tours and lectures at institutions around the world. He lives in a small English village with his wife\, Maureen\, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning\, a letter arrives\, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl\, from a woman he hasn’t heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a quick reply\, a chance encounter convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. In his yachting shoes and light coat\, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest. Determined to walk six hundred miles to the hospice\, Harold believes that as long as he walks\, Queenie will live. A novel of charm\, humor\, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts\, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise—and utterly irresistible—storyteller.

SUMMARY:A Special Story Time with Matt Diffee
DESCRIPTION:What does the dog say? Zip zap wickety wack! We look forward to hosting award-winning cartoonist and The New Yorker contributor\, Matt Diffee\, for a special\, silly story time to debut his new children’s book. Stemming from classic animal sound books\, and already slated as best for the category under WSJ and NYT reviews\, this laugh-out-loud\, soon-to-be classic puts a new spin on the old “cow says moo.” Bring the littles (all ages welcome) for an unexpected and delightfully absurd\, but widely appealing program. \nPurchase Tickets Here! \nChildren’s Admission to this Program is Free!  \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912. \nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to purchase one or more copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nAbout the Book \nNew Yorker cartoonist Matthew Diffee makes his children’s book debut with this laugh-out-loud twist on the classic animal sound book. The cow says “moo.” The horse says “neigh.” Everyone can agree on these. But when the sheep says “baa\,” the goat cuts in. The goat also says “baa.” Now what? No one wants to share their sound! The sheep has an idea—he’ll just say something no one’s ever said before: “zip zap wickety wack bing bang walla balla flip flap yackety yack.” But an otherworldly visitor shows up to lay claim to this sound\, too—and the alien doesn’t want to share his identity either. When the alien proposes a radical new way forward\, the sheep and the goat find a compromise—and it may sound familiar to adult readers . . . Matthew Diffee’s hilarious wit will be an immediate hit with young readers in his first picture book. Sure to inspire boisterous read-alouds and threaded with a sneaky message about sharing\, Zip Zap Wickety Wack will inspire new nonsense and new values in homes\, classrooms\, and farmyards around the world. \nAbout the Author \n\n\nMatthew Diffee has been contributing cartoons to The New Yorker since 1999. His work has also appeared in Time\, The Huffington Post\, The Believer\, and Texas Monthly. He is the editor of three volumes of The Rejection Collection: Cartoons You Never Saw and Never Will See in The New Yorker\, and has also worked as a freelance illustrator. Diffee is a recipient of the Silver Reuben Award for gag cartooning and was recently named Chairman of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society. He grew up in Texas and now lives in Los Angeles.
