Acclaimed biographer Hugo Vickers holds an encyclopedic knowledge of the Royal Family\, but his fascination with the Duchess of Windsor runs deeper\, going back to his own youth. Long misunderstood\, the Duchess of Windsor and her story have both fascinated and polarized. While there have been many books about the doomed couple\, Behind Closed Doors brings a new perspective to Wallis\, specifically by focusing on the later years of exile. While Vickers has his own theories about the Abdication itself—and he makes it very clear that Wallis did not lure the King from the throne—the drama of this narrative comes from the criminal exploitation of an old\, sick woman after the death of her husband. Readers will be shocked by the ruthless French lawyer known as Suzanne Blum and come to understand how the Duchess’s precarious position\, once she was widowed\, only added to her plight. Her once-glamorous life quickly spiralled into one of desperation and fear. \nAbout the Author \nHugo Vickers is well known as a biographer\, lecturer\, and broadcaster\, and is an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family. His first book was about Gladys Deacon\, Duchess of Marlborough (1881-1977)\, in whom he became interested when he was 16 years old. When he was 23\, he found the Duchess in the psycho-geriatric ward of a mental hospital and talked to her for two years until her death at the age of 96. He researched in Europe and America and published Gladys\, Duchess of Marlborough in 1979. Because there was considerably more material available 40 years on\, he revised this book for a new edition\, published in 2020\, as The Sphinx (and paperback in 2021). It received positive reviews. Hugo is called upon to comment on important state occasions and at times when the Royal Family is in the news. He has covered events from the first wedding of the Prince of Wales\, many royal weddings\, and the funerals of Diana\, the Queen Mother\, Prince Philip\, the State Funeral and Committal of The Queen\, and the Coronation of Charles III. The Financial Times has described him as: ‘the most knowledgeable royal biographer on the planet.’ When he spent an hour with Jacqueline Onassis in her office at Doubleday in 1990\, she said to him: ‘You look like a poet\, but your head must be full of information.’ Hugo has written many biographies of 20th century figures\, including Cecil Beaton\, Vivien Leigh\, the Duchess of Windsor\, Princess Andrew of Greece\, and the Queen Mother. His book\, The Quest for Queen Mary\, sold 40\,000 copies in various forms. He attacked the sixty episodes of the Netflix series The Crown – in his book\, The Crown Dissected\, available as an e-book. In May 2021\, he published Malice in Wonderland\, with extracts from his own diaries about researching the life of Cecil Beaton. A year later\, he published a book with HRH The Duke of Kent\, entitled A Royal Life. In 2023\, he updated his 2013 book\, Coronation\, and has lectured about it in London\, New York\, Washington\, Boston\, San Francisco\, and Sonoma. That year\, he gave 44 lectures\, with four trips to the USA. Hugo published his first novel\, Pining in Paradise\, a study of the super-rich on holiday at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice in 2024. Later that year\, he published his biography of Clarissa\, Countess of Avon (widow of Anthony Eden). When not writing\, Hugo travels through the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories\, establishing Commonwealth Walkways\, and as such has visited many countries from Australia\, New Zealand\, and Canada\, to the Cook Islands\, the Falklands\, and\, as he puts it\, was once obliged to spend seven weeks touring the Caribbean. In July 2022\, Prince Edward unveiled the Platinum Jubilee Walkway in Birmingham. Queen Elizabeth II visited the Walkways eight times when he was Chairman. Hugo is a Deputy Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire and has been involved with the College of St George since February 1966. He is Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle\, having served as a Lay Steward since 1970. In 2019\, he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Hugo has lectured in the UK\, the USA\, Australia\, France\, Italy\, Denmark and the Bahamas – in the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace\, at Windsor Castle\, in Marlborough House\, Kensington Palace\, St James’s Palace\, Spencer House\, Blenheim Palace\, and the British Embassy in Paris – as well as on board transatlantic liners and many a village hall. He appeared frequently on Larry King Live between 1997 and 2005\, and had his Andy Warhol moment of fame when he appeared with Stephen Colbert in his programme\, My Fair Colbert\, about the 2011 royal wedding. He lives in London and Wiltshire and has three grown-up children. When possible\, he disappears to a tree house in Dominica.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in partnership with the South Carolina Historical Society as we approach our country’s 250th anniversary — we have explored many different angles of the Revolution – those specific to South Carolina\, further narrowed to the Lowcountry\, the thirteen colonies as a whole\, and much\, much more. But what of the Loyalists? Those who didn’t stand up to British rule and supported the empire and its endeavors? We are highly anticipating the return of celebrated author and renowned historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy for his latest\, another perspective on the Revolutionary era – perhaps a more expanded context from what might be more broadly familiar. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout the Book \nAt the time of the American Revolution (1765–83)\, the British Empire had colonies in India\, Africa\, the Caribbean\, the Pacific\, Canada\, Ireland\, and Gibraltar. The thirteen rebellious American colonies accounted for half of the total number of provinces in the British world in 1776. What of the loyal half? Why did some of Britain’s subjects feel so aggrieved that they wanted to establish a new system of government\, while others did not rebel? In this authoritative history\, Trevor Burnard and Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnessy show that understanding the long-term causes of the American Revolution requires a global view. As much as it was an event in the history of the United States\, the American Revolution was an imperial event produced by the upheavals of managing a far-flung set of imperial possessions during a turbulent period of reform. By looking beyond the familiar borders of the Revolution and considering colonies that did not rebel—Quebec\, Nova Scotia\, Bermuda\, India\, the British Caribbean\, Senegal\, and Ireland—Burnard and O’Shaughnessy go beyond the republican\, liberal\, and democratic aspects of the emerging American nation\, providing a broader history that transcends what we think we know about the Revolution. \nAbout the Author \nAndrew O’Shaughnessy is a distinguished historian and Professor of History at the University of Virginia. From 2003 to 2022\, he served as Vice President of The Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello) and led the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies. A dual citizen of Britain and the United States\, O’Shaughnessy completed his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at Oxford University. His illustrious teaching career includes roles at Eton College\, Southern Methodist University\, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh\, where he chaired the History department. O’Shaughnessy is the acclaimed author of The Men Who Lost America\, which won eight national awards\, including the George Washington Book Prize and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Book Award. His other notable works include An Empire Divided and The Illimitable Freedom of the Human Mind. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society\, he also serves as an editor of the Jeffersonian America series. O’Shaughnessy has also co-edited The European Friends of the American Revolution\, which was published in 2023. His latest book\, which will be published by Yale early in 2025\, is co-authored with Trevor Burnard\, The American Revolution and the Crisis of the British Empire. O’Shaughnessy’s expertise and contributions make him a leading voice in American history. \nAbout Elizabeth Chew \nDr. Elizabeth Chew became CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society in January 2024. A public historian\, curator\, and educator\, she has worked at museums and historic sites for almost forty years. Prior to arriving in Charleston\, she served as Executive Vice President and Chief Curator at James Madison’s Montpelier in Orange\, Virginia and as Curator at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville.\n\nShe received a BA from Yale University\, an MA from the University of London\, and Ph.D. from UNC- Chapel Hill.\nAbout The South Carolina Historical Society \nThe mission of the South Carolina Historical Society is to collect\, preserve\, and share the stories of all South Carolinians and use these stories–from significant historical events to everyday moments–to promote visibility\, understanding\, engagement\, and conversation. SUMMARY:Workshop // Bookbinding: Leather and Gold Tooling
DESCRIPTION:Join the Library Society’s conservation team to dive further into the aspects of hand bookbinding. Starting with a raw framework\, students will be instructed on the techniques and practices working with leather for the cover and the process of detailing it with traditional gold foil. Discussions will focus on the history of the trade of bookbinding and established conservation techniques for preserving books within our libraries and museums. \nAll materials will be provided\, and no prior experience is necessary. Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy\, or bring an apron if you have one.

Founder of Bond Street REIT\, Michael Reynolds\, will host a rare conversation with Special Guest Deepak Srivastava\, President of Gladstone Institutes in California\, and one of the nation’s leading physicians in the science and technology of stem cell research and opportunities to combat congenital heart disease. \nAbout Deepak Srivastava \nDeepak Srivastava\, MD\, is President of Gladstone Institutes\, a nonprofit biomedical research institute that uses visionary science and technology to overcome disease. He is also a senior investigator and director of the Roddenberry Stem Cell Center at Gladstone. In addition\, he is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Biochemistry and Biophysics\, and the Wilma and Adeline Pirag Distinguished Professor in pediatric developmental cardiology at UC San Francisco (UCSF). Srivastava received his MD from the University of Texas\, then trained in pediatrics at UCSF and in pediatric cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. Before joining Gladstone in 2005\, Srivastava was a professor of pediatrics and molecular biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He became Gladstone’s president in 2018\, and has since been steering the organization toward a new era of convergence between technology and biomedical research. In his lab\, Srivastava investigates the genes responsible for normal heart formation and congenital heart disease\, and harnesses this knowledge to engineer cells that can repair heart damage. Srivastava is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and the National Academy of Medicine. He served as president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research in 2019–2020. In addition\, Srivastava has co-founded two biotechnology companies\, iPierian Inc. and Tenaya Therapeutics\, where he continues to sit on the board of directors and on the scientific advisory board. Srivastava was recently recognized in the San Francisco Business Times’ Power 100 list for his leadership in business and research in the Bay Area. \nAbout the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series \nOrchestrated by Founder and Chief Executive Officer\, Michael D. SUMMARY:The Revolution's Bravest General
DESCRIPTION:As a Brigadier General in the French Army\, Major General in the American Revolutionary Army and a French-American liaison during a time of incredible upheaval\, German-native Johann de Kalb led an amazing life\, but his legacy is lesser known than Revolutionary counterparts such as the Marquis de Lafayette\, to whom he may have been a mentor. With a focus on these less publicized leaders in the fight for independence\, and thanks to our ongoing partnership with the N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation\, author and historian John Beakes will enlighten us on the lasting impact of General de Kalb during the American Revolution. \nAbout John Beakes \nJohn Beakes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1966 and served in nuclear submarines until 1974. He then began a career of executive leadership in technology service companies\, from which he retired in 2021. His five books on the Revolutionary War have focused on little-known combat leaders in America’s fight for independence. He co-authored “Cool\, Deliberate Courage: John Eager Howard in the American Revolution” and “‘Light Horse Harry Lee’ in the War for Independence” with Dr. Jim Piecuch. He then completed “Otho Holland Williams in the American Revolution” in 2015 and “De Kalb: One of the Revolutionary War’s Bravest Generals” in 2019. In 2022\, he completed “William Campbell in the American Revolution: Commander of Riflemen at Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse.” These books have brought forth the stories of how these largely unknown military leaders made important contributions to the American victory in the Revolutionary War. \nAbout The N.C. DESCRIPTION:We are so pleased to welcome a return of the distinguished Bertrand Van Ruymbeke for a personal discussion on his latest book\, most timely for all of our discussions about America’s 250th. From a European perspective\, the book analyzes the origins of this event\, the historical context\, the political decisions\, and the diplomatic and military stakes – from the Boston Tea Party (1773) to Franklin’s arrival in France (1776)\, as well as its lasting repercussions.  \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout the Book \n1776 covers the decisive period of the American Revolution\, from the Boston Tea Party (December 1773) to the end of 1776. Primarily focused on the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia\, this work explains how the inhabitants of the thirteen colonies first rebelled against Parliament and then declared their independence on July 4\, 1776. Who were the members of Congress? How did it function? What were the steps that led to independence and war? These are among the central questions explored in this book. \nAbout Bertrand Van Ruymbeke \nBertrand Van Ruymbeke (PhD\, 1995\, La Sorbonne-Nouvelle; Habilitation à diriger des recherches\, 2003\, Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) is professor of American Civilization at the University of Paris 8\, a member of the American Philosophical Society\, a senior honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France\, and a Knight of the Ordre des Palmes académiques. He currently leads the collaborative study program America 2026 (Agence Nationale de la Recherche)\, which gathers French\, European\, and American scholars and institutions in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States (www.america2026.eu). He is an elected member of the Conseil National des Universités\, as well as of the juries for the SAES / AFEA research prize and for the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris thesis prize. He sits on the Council of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg\, Virginia\, and on the board of the Early American Studies Association and of the Société d’études anglo-américaines XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles; he is also “relations with learned societies in France and Europe” vice-president for the Réseau Européen pour le Développement de l’Histoire de la Jeune Amérique. He is currently preparing two books on the American Revolution: 1776. L’année américaine (publisher : Tallandier) and L’empire de la liberté\, La Naissance des Etats-Unis (c.1750-1789) (publisher : CNRS Éditions) \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. This program is sponsored (in part) by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. SC250 was established by the SC Legislature to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary-Era and highlight the state’s significant role in securing America’s freedom by engaging and inspiring South Carolinians and visitors through heritage tourism\, rural economic impact initiatives\, and educational programs.
