SUMMARY:Cinelle Barnes // "A Way Home"
DESCRIPTION:Creator of the widely beloved Monsoon Mansion\, Charleston-based author Cinelle Barnes will soon release her second book\, a special personal memoir\, and we could not be more honored to host her pub week debut. After a multi-year recovery\, A Way Home documents the unexpected journey of recovery and rediscovery\, following a traumatic brain injury\, and how she charted her way back. Cinelle was last in the Main Reading Room to support our Inaugural Book Drop launch in September of 2024\, and we could not be more humbled to support this exciting launch. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912.\nAbout the Book \nIn 2023\, Cinelle Barnes is writing a travelogue about journeying home to the Philippines after a twenty-year separation when she suffers a traumatic brain injury. Cinelle’s story of her adoption and immigration to America as a child is not an easy one to tell to begin with. Suddenly\, it seems impossible. Her memories and her connection to her husband and daughter in the Carolinas\, to her own sense of self\, and to her past are all erased in the blink of an eye. Cinelle has to not only piece together who she used to be but also struggle to learn who she is here and now. In this memoir of resilience and recovery\, Cinelle charts her way back to life. Through her unfinished manuscript\, she sees a creative and vibrant former self she longs to remember and to know all over again. With the everlasting support of family and friends\, Cinelle discovers that nobody heals or journeys home alone. \nAbout the Author \nCinelle Barnes is the Philippine-born author of Monsoon Mansion: A Memoir\, Malaya: Essays on Freedom\, and A Way Home: A Memoir of Losing Yourself and the Beauty of Returning. She is also the editor of the New York Times “New and Noteworthy” A Measure of Belonging: Twenty-One Writers of Color on the New American South. Cinelle is a survivor of a brain aneurysm rupture and sits on the Brain Injury Leadership Council of South Carolina\, and is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Sustainable Arts Fund\, the Authors League Fund\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, South Arts\, and the North American Travel Journalists Association\, among others. She has served on the jury panels for several literary awards\, including the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Memoir. Her writing has appeared in Coastal Living\, Travel + Leisure\, Buzzfeed\, Catapult\, Electric Literature\, and Longreads\, among others. Cinelle lives in Charleston\, SC\, with her husband\, daughter\, and cat.

SUMMARY:2084 // Admiral Stavridis' Latest
DESCRIPTION:With a PhD in International Relations\, Admiral James Stavridis has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, yet NYT bestselling author is only one of his many titles. Retired 4-star officer of the US Navy\, Supreme Allied Commander\, Dean at Tufts University are a few others\, along with his current role as Partner and Vice Chairman with Carlyle Group. Following the success of 2034\, which he co-authored with Elliott Ackerman\, we could not be more honored to welcome Admiral Stavridis to Charleston to share its next iteration – 2084: A Novel of Future War. We look forward to seeing you for a special opportunity to share the room with this decorated Navy Veteran and prolific author. \nIf you are unable to attend the event but would like to purchase one or more signed copies\, please visit Buxton Books here. \nPurchase tickets HERE. \nPlease note\, we’ve updated our ticketing system—purchases now go through Neon Events for a smoother registration experience. For any issues\, please call our Front Desk at 843-723-9912.\nAbout the Author \nAdmiral James Stavridis is Partner and Vice Chairman of Carlyle and Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Rockefeller Foundation\, following five years as the 12th Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. A retired 4-star officer in the U.S. Navy\, he led the NATO Alliance in global operations from 2009 to 2013 as Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan\, Libya\, the Balkans\, Syria\, counter piracy\, and cyber security. He also served as Commander of U.S. Southern Command\, with responsibility for all military operations in Latin America from 2006-2009. He earned more than 50 medals\, including 28 from foreign nations\, in his 37-year military career. Earlier in his military career\, he commanded the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet\, winning the Battenberg Cup\, as well as a squadron of destroyers and a carrier strike group – all in combat. In 2016\, he was vetted for Vice President by Hillary Clinton and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position in the Trump Administration. Admiral Stavridis earned a PhD in international relations and has published fifteen books and hundreds of articles in leading journals around the world\, including the recent novel 2034: A Novel of the Next World War\, which was a New York Times bestseller and To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and The Crucible of Decision. His most recent novel\, The Restless Wave: A Novel of the United States Navy\, was published in October 2024\, and The Admiral’s Bookshelf was published in March 2025. His 2012 TED talk on global security has close to one million views. Admiral Stavridis is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and Senior Military Analyst for CNN. \nAbout the Book \nA gripping drama and chilling prophecy about the possible path to war for a planet devastated by climate change. In their novel 2034\, decorated military officers and award-winning authors Elliot Ackerman and Admiral James Stavridis imagined a war between the US and China. In their follow-up novel\, 2054\, they envisioned a breakdown in American politics fueled by a radical advance in AI. Now they make their boldest\, most astonishing\, and arguably most necessary leap—imagining the consequences of a climate war. By the year 2084\, the world is divided into the equatorial countries that bear the brunt of the climate crisis—led by Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Indonesia—and wealthier countries like China and the US\, beset by their own problems after a series of civil wars. Tensions between the two sets of countries have reached a breaking point\, until finally the so-called Reparationist nations of the equator decide that only military force can bring them justice. A fascinating and disturbingly plausible extrapolation from current realities\, 2084\, like other classics of the genre such as Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future and Neal Stephenson’s Termination Shock\, deploys a global cast of characters\, all protecting their interests as the fate of human civilization hangs in the balance. Individuals often seem small in the face of the forces that drive global change\, but in the end\, human agency proves surprisingly decisive. Big doors can swing on small hinges. We have it within ourselves to write a different destiny\, if only we can imagine it.

SUMMARY:Bertrand Van Ruymbeke // 1776 L'Annee Americaine
DESCRIPTION:We are so pleased to welcome a return of the distinguished Bertrand Van Ruymbeke for a personal discussion on his latest book\, most timely for all of our discussions about America’s 250th. From a European perspective\, the book analyzes the origins of this event\, the historical context\, the political decisions\, and the diplomatic and military stakes – from the Boston Tea Party (1773) to Franklin’s arrival in France (1776)\, as well as its lasting repercussions.  \nPrior to the program\, we invite our Fellows Members to enjoy Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm\, downstairs in the Dr. Suzan D. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout the Book \n1776 covers the decisive period of the American Revolution\, from the Boston Tea Party (December 1773) to the end of 1776. Primarily focused on the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia\, this work explains how the inhabitants of the thirteen colonies first rebelled against Parliament and then declared their independence on July 4\, 1776. Who were the members of Congress? How did it function? What were the steps that led to independence and war? These are among the central questions explored in this book. \nAbout Bertrand Van Ruymbeke \nBertrand Van Ruymbeke (PhD\, 1995\, La Sorbonne-Nouvelle; Habilitation à diriger des recherches\, 2003\, Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) is professor of American Civilization at the University of Paris 8\, a member of the American Philosophical Society\, a senior honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France\, and a Knight of the Ordre des Palmes académiques. He currently leads the collaborative study program America 2026 (Agence Nationale de la Recherche)\, which gathers French\, European\, and American scholars and institutions in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States (www.america2026.eu). He is an elected member of the Conseil National des Universités\, as well as of the juries for the SAES / AFEA research prize and for the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris thesis prize. He sits on the Council of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg\, Virginia\, and on the board of the Early American Studies Association and of the Société d’études anglo-américaines XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles; he is also “relations with learned societies in France and Europe” vice-president for the Réseau Européen pour le Développement de l’Histoire de la Jeune Amérique. He is currently preparing two books on the American Revolution: 1776. L’année américaine (publisher : Tallandier) and L’empire de la liberté\, La Naissance des Etats-Unis (c.1750-1789) (publisher : CNRS Éditions) \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. This program is sponsored (in part) by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission. SC250 was established by the SC Legislature to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary-Era and highlight the state’s significant role in securing America’s freedom by engaging and inspiring South Carolinians and visitors through heritage tourism\, rural economic impact initiatives\, and educational programs. SUMMARY:The Revolution's Bravest General
DESCRIPTION:As a Brigadier General in the French Army\, Major General in the American Revolutionary Army and a French-American liaison during a time of incredible upheaval\, German-native Johann de Kalb led an amazing life\, but his legacy is lesser known than Revolutionary counterparts such as the Marquis de Lafayette\, to whom he may have been a mentor. With a focus on these less publicized leaders in the fight for independence\, and thanks to our ongoing partnership with the N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation\, author and historian John Beakes will enlighten us on the lasting impact of General de Kalb during the American Revolution. \nAbout John Beakes \nJohn Beakes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1966 and served in nuclear submarines until 1974. He then began a career of executive leadership in technology service companies\, from which he retired in 2021. His five books on the Revolutionary War have focused on little-known combat leaders in America’s fight for independence. He co-authored “Cool\, Deliberate Courage: John Eager Howard in the American Revolution” and “‘Light Horse Harry Lee’ in the War for Independence” with Dr. Jim Piecuch. He then completed “Otho Holland Williams in the American Revolution” in 2015 and “De Kalb: One of the Revolutionary War’s Bravest Generals” in 2019. In 2022\, he completed “William Campbell in the American Revolution: Commander of Riflemen at Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse.” These books have brought forth the stories of how these largely unknown military leaders made important contributions to the American victory in the Revolutionary War. \nAbout The N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation: \nThe N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation was founded by Klaus Becker\, then Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany to North Carolina. The mission of the Foundation is reflected in its name\, Zeitgeist\, which means the “Spirit of the Time\,” is to inform\, educate\, and foster dialogue about the influence in the Carolinas of the current and historic culture\, arts\, society\, and spirit of Germany and Europe in celebrating their deep-rooted ties to the United States. Its mission is to strengthen transatlantic partnerships through cultural exchange\, business collaboration\, and shared innovation. By connecting communities across North Carolina and Germany\, we foster understanding\, economic opportunity\, and artistic inspiration on both sides of the Atlantic. In recognition of the long-standing German/European-American transatlantic relationship\, the program of the Foundation focuses on the exchange of societal and governmental thought and theory\, art exhibitions\, and cultural and social events. Since its inception in 2014\, The N.C. Zeitgeist Foundation has strongly supported economic development and growth in the Greater Charlotte Region\, including initiatives to brand and promote the Carolinas as a premier US location for international business\, trade\, and investment. \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. This program is sponsored (in part) by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission.
