But that same summer\, as patriots celebrated their defiant new nation\, American armies launched another campaign—this one aimed at destroying the Cherokee nation. The Cherokee War of 1776 recasts America’s founding moment by tracing the importance of westward ambition and settler violence to the origins of the Revolutionary War. In this gripping and sobering book\, historian Kevin Kokomoor uncovers the rarely acknowledged war waged by the emerging United States against the Cherokee people just days after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Far from a spontaneous frontier skirmish\, this war was a coordinated\, state-backed campaign with a clear aim: seize Indigenous land and crush Native resistance. Many of the very men who championed liberty on parchment simultaneously advocated for the wholesale destruction of a sovereign Native nation. At the heart of this story is Cherokee resistance\, which was strategic\, determined\, and deeply rooted in community dynamics. Figures like Dragging Canoe emerged to lead a movement that endured long after American armies had burned Cherokee towns to the ground. Kokomoor foregrounds Cherokee voices\, motivations\, and resilience\, challenging the notion that they were merely pawns in a colonial struggle and forcing us to reckon with the real costs of independence and the long fight for Indigenous sovereignty. \nEnslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina \nIn 1708\, the governor of South Carolina responded to a request from London to describe the population of the colony. This response included an often-overlooked segment of the population: Native Americans\, who made up one-fourth of all enslaved people in the colony. Yet it was not long before these descriptions of enslaved Native people all but disappeared from the archive. In Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina\, D. Andrew Johnson argues that Native people were crucial to the development of South Carolina’s economy and culture. By meticulously scouring documentary sources and creating a database of over 15\,000 mentions of enslaved people\, Johnson uses a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to reconsider the history of South Carolina and center the enslaved Native people who were forced to live and work on its plantations. Johnson also employs spatial analysis and examines archaeological evidence to study Native slavery in a plantation context. Although much of their impact is absent from the historical record\, Native people’s influence persisted: in the specific technologies they brought to the plantations where they were enslaved; in the development of Creole culture; and in the wealth and power of the founders and early leaders of the colony. This book is an important corrective to our understanding of the colonization and development of South Carolina. By focusing on the Native minority of the enslaved population\, Johnson recasts the colonial history of America\, uncovering the importance of enslaved Native people to the colonial project and the complex historical connections between race and slavery. \nAbout Professor Kevin Kokomoor (from 2024) \nKevin Kokomoor is a fourth-generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. His first academic position after graduate school was at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina\, where he is currently employed. In addition to La Florida\, he has also authored several articles in academic journals\, including Journal of Southern History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, Florida Historical Quarterly\, Journal of Sport History\, and Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. He won the Thompson Award for the best article published in Florida Historical Quarterly in 2009 and the E. Merton Coulter Award for the best article published in Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2013. In 2017 he was a Howard H. Peckham Fellow of Revolutionary America at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Other sources of support include the American Philosophical Society\, the David Library of the American Revolution\, Emory University\, and the University of Florida.  \nAbout Dr. Andrew Johnson \nDr. Andrew Johnson is a historian of early America and the early-modern Atlantic and is the editor of publications at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and PhD from Rice University. The winner of numerous academic awards\, including The Fletcher M. Green and Charles W. Ramsdell Award from the Southern Historical Association for the best article published in the Journal of Southern History over a two-year period. His publications include Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina (Johns Hopkins University Press)\, the Journals of the House of Representatives of South Carolina\, 1794–1795 (South Carolina Department of Archives and History)\, as well as co-editing Atlantic Environments and the American South (University of Georgia Press). \n About Dr. Sandy Slater \nDr. Sandra Slater is Professor of History and Director of the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program (CLAW) at the College of Charleston. She has published widely in scholarly journals such as Church History and the Journal of Early American History. Her recent book\, The Pompe and Pride of Man: Pride and Humility in Early New England was published in 2025 and was nominated for the Winthrop Prize. Professor Slater is the chair of the Native American Task Force at the College of Charleston and in her role as Director of CLAW\, works with scholars\, public historians\, archives and museums across the Atlantic World to host academic programming at CofC. \nAbout SC 250 \nSC250 Charleston is intended to serve as an umbrella for Charleston-area community organizations\, governmental entities\, and business enterprises interested in conceiving\, building and sponsoring initiatives that commemorate the American Revolution and leading roles played by Charleston’s people and places. He went on to pursue a career in the investment industry\, where he began as a fixed-income analyst and ended as a financial writer and columnist. Niederman returned to mathematics in 2011 when he moved to South Carolina and joined the mathematics faculty at the College of Charleston. By that time he had published more than 50 crosswords of various sizes and stripes\, including 20+ for the Sunday New York Times. Niederman is also the author of a dozen books\, on topics ranging from investments to quantitative reasoning and\, of course\, to puzzles. He created the word game PathWords and the geometric puzzle 36 Cube for ThinkFun (now Ravensburger) and in 2025 launched his own game company\, Wordsmith Games\, whose flagship game is called Tosswords. Elsewhere in business pursuits\, he has long been a board member of a family-owned manufacturing company in Connecticut\, and earlier this year was named Chairman. When away from his desk\, he is a duplicate bridge enthusiast and a tournament-caliber squash player\, with several national age group doubles titles and one national singles title to his credit.

As a long-serving U.S. Senator\, Lamar leaves a legacy spanning politics\, education leadership\, and public service that has shaped both education policy\, public spaces\, and community programs. As the 5th U.S. Secretary of Education\, he championed the “America 2000” initiative and later advanced federal legislation for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and the 2018 Education Next+1\, which expanded accountability to improve student outcomes. Lamar Alexander’s career in education leadership —through federal\, state\, and legislative roles—has had a lasting impact on American schools and public institutions\, through infrastructure investment and public service priorities. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Lamar Alexander \nLamar Alexander has long been known as one of America’s most principled and effective statesmen. As US Senator\, Alexander shepherded major laws that today govern K–12 education\, medical innovation\, and maintenance of our national parks. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said\, “For eighteen years\, there was Lamar Alexander\, and there was the rest of us. He was hands-down one of the most brilliant\, most thoughtful\, and most effective legislators any of us have ever seen.” As governor\, Alexander brought the auto industry to Tennessee and made it the first state to pay teachers more for teaching well. He was chairman of the Senate Republican Conference\, the nation’s governors\, and of President Reagan’s “Commission on Americans Outdoors.” He served as US Education Secretary and as a university president. \nAlexander was also known for campaigning in a plaid shirt and performing on the piano with twenty-seven symphonies and on the Grand Ol’ Opry. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and New York University Law School. He and his late wife Honey were married for fifty-four years\, had four children and nine grandchildren. His parents were teachers. A seventh generation Tennessean\, Alexander lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maryville where he grew up. \nAbout the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series \nOrchestrated by Founder and Chief Executive Officer\, Michael D. Reynolds\, who passionately served as a member of the Board of Trustees and also Treasurer of the Charleston Library Society\, the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series strives to honor the institution’s cultural enrichment\, intellectual exploration\, and literary legacy through a series of lively discussions and thought-provoking lectures. Bond Street is dedicated to preserving the Charleston Library Society’s renowned collection and historical significance\, as an immensely valuable repository of history in the South. Bond Street Real Estate Investment Trust\, headquartered in Charleston\, is a private real estate investment trust uniquely invested in convenience retail centers across ten states in the Southeast. \nIn 1831\, Alexis de Tocqueville toured America and visited Charleston in search of the special ingredient that made America’s democracy so powerful. What he discovered was that the glue that created community and civic discourse was its profoundly thriving cultural institutions. Libraries\, theaters\, museums\, and other cultural spaces served as the foundation for civic engagement and public dialogue. Delving into more than 170 years of ingenuity in design\, technology\, and engineering\, he takes us from Carl Benz’s three-wheel motorcar in 1855 to the present-day shift to electric cars. Along the way\, he looks at the emergence of mass production with Henry Ford’s Model T; the Golden Age of American car design and the rise of car culture; postwar European subcompacts typified by the Mini Cooper; and the long tradition of the streamlined and elegant sports car. Rybczynski explores how cars have reflected national character (the charming Italian Fiat Cinquecento)\, served as icons of a subculture (the VW bus for American hippies)\, and even emulated an era (the practical Chrysler minivan). He explains key developments in automotive technology\, including the electric starter\, rack-and-pinion steering\, and disc brakes\, highlighting how the modern automobile is the result of more than a century of trial and error. And he weaves in charming accounts of the many cars he’s owned and driven\, starting with his first—the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. The Driving Machine is a breezy and fascinating history of design\, illustrated with the author’s delightful drawings. \nAbout the Author \n\n\nWitold Rybczynski\, of Polish parentage\, was born in Edinburgh\, raised in London\, and attended Jesuit schools in England and Canada. He studied architecture at McGill University in Montreal\, where he also taught; he is currently emeritus professor of urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania. His architectural experience has included designing houses as a registered architect\, as well as researching low-cost housing for which he received a 1991 Progressive Architecture award. In 1993\, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects\, and he has received honorary doctorates from McGill University and the University of Western Ontario. In 2007\, he received the Vincent Scully Prize\, the Seaside Prize\, and the Institute Collaborative Honors from the AIA. He served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 2004 to 2012. Library Journal described Rybczynski as “one of our most original\, accessible\, and stimulating writers on architecture.” He has written twenty-two books on subjects as varied as the evolution of comfort\, a history of the weekend\, American urbanism\, the development of a new community\, and a search for the origins of the screwdriver. Home has been translated into ten languages\, and was nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Prize\, while A Clearing in the Distance\, a biography of Frederick Law Olmsted\, received the J. Anthony Lukas Prize\, a Christopher Award\, a Philadelphia Athenæum literary award\, and was shortlisted for the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Nonfiction. His essays have appeared regularly in Architect and The New York Times\, and he has written for The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, and The New York Review of Books. In 2014\, he was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. He has been an architecture critic for Saturday Night\, Wigwag\, and Slate. In 2014\, Rybczynski received the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Design Mind\, and in 2023\, he received an Arthur Ross Award for Publishing. His latest book is The Driving Machine\, a design history of the car. Witold Rybczynski lives in Philadelphia.
