However\, he may be more widely renowned for his success in confronting racism through friendships founded by dialogue and discourse with long-standing members of the Ku Klux Klan. Boyd Fellows Club Lounge.  \nAbout Daryl Davis \nDaryl Davis is best known for his talent as a musician; he is an international recording artist and is recognized for being one of the greatest Blues\, Boogie Woogie & Rock ’n’ Roll pianists of all time. In addition to his music career\, Daryl is the author of Klan-Destine Relationships\, which was the first book written about the Ku Klux Klan by a Black author. His engagement with the KKK started when\, while playing in an all-White band\, a member of the Klan praised him for his musical style. Daryl recognized that he had an opportunity to ask an important question about racism: “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” Daryl has interviewed hundreds of KKK members and other White supremacists and influenced many of them to renounce their racist ideology. His work in race relations has been highlighted in speaker series across the country. His documentary film\, Accidental Courtesy\, illustrates his process of conversation and understanding to bridge differences and promote racial reconciliation in true Prohuman form. \nAbout Mike Lee \nMichael J. Lee is the director of the Civility Initiative and a professor of communication at the College of Charleston. The Civility Initiative promotes healthy disagreement and dialogue across differences through workshops\, trainings\, speakers\, debates\, and When We Disagree\, a podcast about memorable disagreements in our lives. His research focuses on political identity in American politics. His work has earned over a dozen awards\, including five national book awards for his first book\, Creating Conservatism: Postwar Words that Made an American Movement. His latest book is We Are Not One People: Separatism and Secession in American Politics Since 1776.  \nAbout the Civility Initiative \n\n\nThe Civility Initiative at the College of Charleston was created to foster real change and promote dialogue across differences. This is accomplished by hosting speakers\, convening panels\, and sponsoring workshops about communal engagement and healthy disagreement. DESCRIPTION:While not a term currently familiar to most\, deep mapping is a rapidly growing field\, and one of the most unique ways to engage a community in creating detailed\, public-facing digital maps that integrate spatial\, historical\, cultural\, and environmental data to tell the full and broader story of a place and its people. Over the last year and a half\, a small group from Charleston has initiated this process for the Lowcountry\, working closely with Don Lafrenerie\, Director of the Community Deep Mapping Institute at Michigan Technological University\, and James Newhard\, Director of the Center for Historical Landscapes. Join Don and James\, along with Doug Rivet\, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the College of Charleston\, and CLS Director of Development Jen Comer for a riveting discussion about what has already been completed\, the insights gleaned\, and what we’ll see in the next phase of the project. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Don Lafreniere \nDr. Don Lafreniere is Professor of Geography & GIS\, Director of the Center for Geospatial Research and Technology\, and Director of the Community Deep Mapping Institute at Michigan Technological University.   He has led dozens of projects and published extensively on topics such GIS approaches to historic preservation\, community resiliency\, housing\, and children’s health.  He is an expert in GIS-based spatial data infrastructures to support economic development\, heritage tourism\, and preservation in post-industrial communities.  \nAbout James Newhard \nJames Newhard is Director of the Center for Historical Landscapes at the College of Charleston\, where he co-directs the Spatial History of Charleston. A Registered Professional Archaeologist\, his research focuses on landscape archaeology\, archaeoinformatics\, geospatial analysis\, and the long-term histories of human-environmental systems. His work has included field and digital humanities projects in Greece\, Turkey\, Albania\, the Ohio Valley\, and the Carolina Lowcountry. At Charleston\, he additionally has led projects involving historical GIS\, spatial databases\, and community-engaged approaches to documenting layered cultural landscapes. His current work with SHOC brings together deep mapping\, public history\, and community-centered approaches to improve access to Charleston’s dispersed historical records and to support descendant communities\, preservation advocacy\, and more equitable understandings of place. \nAbout Doug Rivet \nDouglas Rivet is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Urban and Regional Planner Certificate Program at the College of Charleston. As a geographer\, his work is grounded in urban geography\, city planning\, and geospatial analysis. His research examines the relationships among urban environments\, transportation systems\, development\, and rehabilitation\, with particular focus on how built\, social\, and natural systems shape urban spaces over time. Drawing on experience in local government\, GIS\, property assessment\, and policy\, he brings applied urban expertise to historical and community-based spatial research. His work with the Spatial History of Charleston integrates historical cartography\, GIS\, deep mapping\, and public-facing geospatial approaches to support interdisciplinary scholarship\, planning\, and public engagement. \nAbout Jennifer Comer \nJennifer Comer\, the Director of Development & Membership at the Charleston Library Society\, will moderate the panel. As a long-serving U.S. Senator\, Lamar leaves a legacy spanning politics\, education leadership\, and public service that has shaped both education policy\, public spaces\, and community programs. As the 5th U.S. Secretary of Education\, he championed the “America 2000” initiative and later advanced federal legislation for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and the 2018 Education Next+1\, which expanded accountability to improve student outcomes. Lamar Alexander’s career in education leadership —through federal\, state\, and legislative roles—has had a lasting impact on American schools and public institutions\, through infrastructure investment and public service priorities. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Lamar Alexander \nLamar Alexander has long been known as one of America’s most principled and effective statesmen. As US Senator\, Alexander shepherded major laws that today govern K–12 education\, medical innovation\, and maintenance of our national parks. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said\, “For eighteen years\, there was Lamar Alexander\, and there was the rest of us. He was hands-down one of the most brilliant\, most thoughtful\, and most effective legislators any of us have ever seen.” As governor\, Alexander brought the auto industry to Tennessee and made it the first state to pay teachers more for teaching well. He was chairman of the Senate Republican Conference\, the nation’s governors\, and of President Reagan’s “Commission on Americans Outdoors.” He served as US Education Secretary and as a university president. \nAlexander was also known for campaigning in a plaid shirt and performing on the piano with twenty-seven symphonies and on the Grand Ol’ Opry. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and New York University Law School. He and his late wife Honey were married for fifty-four years\, had four children and nine grandchildren. His parents were teachers. A seventh generation Tennessean\, Alexander lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maryville where he grew up. The course will delve into all aspects of the eight-year struggle\, covering everything from general British and American strategies for rebellion and patriot and loyalist conflict to tensions between the Lowcountry and the backcountry\, important people\, and\, of course\, details on all of the key battles. His research into the Battle of Sullivan’s Island led to the publication of his findings and the creation of Thomson Park at Breach Inlet. A fellow of the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution\, he served on the board of the South Carolina Historical Society and chaired the Fort Sumter – Fort Moultrie Historical Trust. He was a founding trustee of the South Carolina American Revolution Trust and co-founder of SC250 Charleston. MacIntyre earned a B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served five years in the U.S. Army. He earned a M.S. degree in Business Administration with honors from Boston University and completed advanced management programs at Harvard and Stanford. His business career spanned the spectrum from startups to the Fortune 500 before he retired to Charleston in 2004. As president and CEO\, he led technology companies through formation\, global expansion\, public offerings\, mergers\, and acquisitions. He served on industry and civic boards and was president of the American Software Association.
