Using the Library
The staff at the Charleston Library Society is always happy to assist patrons with anything from research inquiries to locating a good book or movie for the weekend.
Researchers are welcome to use our collections during the Library's open hours. For advanced research assistance, a staff member is available at the Reference Desk in the Main Reading Room, Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 12:00pm. Visit our Research Services page for more information about the help we offer researchers.
The Circulation Desk is located in the Main Reading Room next to the front door. Here, members can return and check out books, reserve books, sign up for events and classes, and ask for help finding books. Requests for photocopies can also be made at the Circulation Desk.
The Main Reading Room also holds our circulating and reference materials. On the main floor, we have Fiction published after 1970, Mysteries, Biographies, Southern history, South Carolina history and geography, and Reference. The second level of the Main Reading Room holds all other Non-Fiction books.
Our new acquisitions and DVDs are located in the galley crossing over the Gateway Walk connecting to the other buildings of the Library Society. The Children’s and Young Adult Collections, Fiction published before 1970, and Audiobooks can be found downstairs, below the Main Reading Room.
Our card catalog is still used in locating materials by title, author and subject. Members and visiting researchers may also access our online catalog through the computer located across from the card catalog in the Main Reading Room.
Tables and study carrels are located throughout the library for members and researchers to conduct research, read, and study. WiFi is available throughout the library. Please ask a staff member for the password.
