Collectors of art have long played a discrete but powerful role in building the world's great museums. Of parallel influence has been that of the intermediary- the art dealer- who has brought the passionate collector and the unique work of art together.
In this Arts and Influences Seminar, "A Passionate Journey: Collectors, Dealers and The Collection of Art", we will examine the role of these key players in the art world, from the collectors whose passions have driven them to collect and the remarkable works of art themselves that are a result of those passions, to the fascinating role of the art dealer/intermediaries whose own passions and wide range of interests and skills have guided collectors, museum curators, and, importantly, the value of the art itself. We will look at a selection of collectors, dealers, and collections as we uncover the intriguing stories behind the works of art and understand more deeply the art market itself and the passionate journeys that lie behind it.
Barbara Horlbeck, M.A. is an independent researcher, adjunct instructor of art history, International Study Leader for the Smithsonian and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and founder of Arts and Influences.
